Washington Post Dispels Mexico Myths

After so many sensationalized reports about the "drug war" in Mexico, it's nice to see one major publication focussing on the truth. The Washington Post, yesterday, cut through the hysterical rhetoric of other newspapers and ran an opinion piece, by three academic experts, to dispel the myths about violence in Mexico.

First, in answer to the misperception that "Mexico is descending into widespread and indiscriminate violence" they said "the violence is not as widespread or as random as it may appear ... organized crime is not threatening to take over the federal government. Mexico is not turning into a failed state."This is a point we have been making to our customers: yes, there is violence, but not in the tourist areas. In fact, we undertook our own research last year and found that Mexican tourists zones are up to 26 times safer than those in the U.S.A.

The second myth they tackled was: "The Mexican government lacks the resources to fight the cartels." The capital's daily paper pointed out the victories made over the last year, including a significant weakening of drug trafficking gangs. They said, "the battle against organized crime is not a lost cause. Thanks to a genuine commitment by Mexican officials and greater cooperation with the United States.

"The next mistruth they rebut is: "Endemic corruption allows the cartels to flourish." They point out that many high profile figures have already been toppled for corruption and there is "a real commitment by honest officials to root out malfeasance." They say more work needs to be done, but Mexico is already improving in this respect due to "courageous journalists and new civic organizations calling for greater accountability."

The fourth misconception is a common one: "Drug violence is a Mexican problem, not a U.S. one." We couldn't agree more and cringe every time there is a reference to the "Mexican" drug war. The reason the drugs come through Mexico is to supply the world's biggest consumers: Americans.

The Washinton Post agrees and says the U.S. should, "redouble its efforts to reduce American demand for illegal narcotics." They also point out that the criminals bring weapons from the U.S. to Mexico, and it is the responsibility of the U.S. to address this problem. Finally, the last myth they bust is that, "Mexican drug violence is spilling over into the United States." To this they say "there has been little of the same spectacular violence on the American side" and point out that conviction rates are higher in the U.S.A. and there is, in fact, little 'spillover'.

In conclusion, the Washington Post calmly pointed out that hystericism and myths needs to be overcome and the U.S.A. needs to work very closely with Mexico towards a solution. This is as much a U.S. problem as a Mexican problem. The article was written by three respected scholars in the field: Andrew Selee, director of the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; David Shirk, fellow at the center and an associate professor at the University of San Diego; and Eric Olson, senior adviser at the center.

New Airport for the Tulum Real Estate Region

Updated news for the Tulum Real Estate market; Towards the end of July the Secretary of Transport and Communications Juan Molinar Horcasitas, confirmed that by November at the latest, the International licitation will be public in spite of the world

Aeropuerto para La Riviera Maya en el Municipo de Tulum
economic situation
During the Invest Mexico Fiorum 2009 in Mexico city last week, the secretary Molinar Horcasitas, added: “we are still working on legal, technical and financial aspects of the project and this is the reason for postponing the licitation until November” , likewise SCT confirmed that the land in Tulum has been acquired and we are in possession of it.

The construction of the International Airport of Tulum responds to the need to increase the flow of tourist to this international destination. This responds to the anti-cyclic strategy that president Calderon administration is adopting to ease the effect of the global crisis and more importantly the country’s development in areas such as Mexico tourist industries, Mexico real estate . The Riviera Maya International airport is one of the largest and more ambitious projects on the table of the National infrastructure plan The authorities project that the volume will be 700 thousand pax per year and increase to 3 million / yr and by the year 2025, 17.9 million tourists would have visited the Riviera Maya using the new facility.

The new airport will be in direct competition with Cancun s airport located only 102 Km away which is presently managed by ASUR, the federal competition commission will determine the level of involvement of ASUR in the new Airport if they win the bid.
The estimated investment for the first face will be in the 150 million dollars and 300 million when completed and the basis to bid will be public by November.
The impact of the new airport construction will and is affecting Mexico real estate values, and overall services will increase dramatically.

Today the market has adjusted and prices have dropped accordingly especially in saturated areas and in those areas that have been over constructed during the high demand periods. The Tulum area is one of those areas that have been affected to a lesser degree and is a market that has large potential of growth and opportunity for investors.

One can still buy Tulum beachfront residential lots at affordable prices compared to other places and acquire larger parcels with density and zoning that represent a tangible opportunity for avid investors and visionaries. Please ask me (silvia.orrego@rivieramayaweb.com) about these opportunities and I will be happy to provide help to you.

How safe is Mexico?

In light of escalating drug-related crime in Mexico's big border cities, safety is a valid concern. The data simply doesn’t support avoiding tourist areas of Mexico. There have been exactly ZERO tourist deaths in the Cancun area duedrug cartel violence. In 2009 more than 4.5 million international tourists arrived at theCancun Airport.

The vast majority of these tourists went home withnothing worse than sunburn and a hangover. Tourists do die here, justlike they do in every tourist destination, but if you look at the statistics you see that they die from drowning (usually because theyswim while drunk) or from heart attacks or sometimes they die in car accidents.

If you read the US State Dept warning carefully you will see that itwarns people away from the border areas, primarily Tijuana and Juarez. Those areas are 1200+ miles from Cancun Airport. Would you avoid going to Miami, Florida because of violence in Detroit, Michigan? I wouldn’t.

It would be a shame for you to cancel your trip because of worry overviolence toward tourists here. Tourists need to use common sense here;there is the normal petty crime you find in any tourist destination. But there simply isn’t violence against tourists here in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and any other destination in the Riviera Maya.

Explore the Ruins of Ancient Chichen Itza, Mexico

The ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá must be among the most photographed ruins in the Americas, if not the world. The reasons for this are self-evident: it is a truly impressive city, and its dominating feature, the pyramid of Kukulcán, is to many the very symbol of Mexico’s roots in antiquity.

At Chichén Itzá, during the spring and fall equinoxes — that is when the day and night are of equal length — the great pyramid serves as a visual symbol of the day and night. On every equinox, the sun of the late afternoon creates the illusion of a snake creeping slowly down the northern staircase.

The equinox - Every March 21, when the equinox occurs, the light falls in such a way on the northwest corner of El Castillo as to present a graphic depiction of darkness and light, symbolizing day and night. The triangles on the side of the staircase resemble those of a rattlesnake when viewed from the side. Symbolically, the feathered serpent joins the heavens, earth and the underworld, day and night. This engineering feat was accomplished with stone tools, and without the wheel, by orienting the corners with solstitial points. The pyramid sits figuratively and metaphorically at the center of space and time: a temple, the cosmos, a calendar, and a giant sun dial.

These symbolic uses of the Temple of Kukulcán bear comparison with other solar phenomena both in the Americas, and around the world. The megaliths of ancient Europe, Stonehenge in Britain for example, were frequently situated to mark the passage of the seasons. The observance of the solstices and equinoxes is practiced in numerous cultures, and many scholars of religion demonstrate that Christian holidays were often timed to coincide with these events in antiquity.

Increasingly large crowds of visitors come to the site to view the spectacle. Numbers of Maya themselves show up, proud of their heritage and the ancient monuments their ancestors built. There are throngs of tourists, 40,000 last year, both Mexican and foreign, who come to participate in the event. The whole day has a carnival type atmosphere with vendors, and rock bands competing with traditional music and folk dance troupes, and groups of New Agers in robes come to see the equinox. Some people complain about the lack of parking, others reject the commercialization of the event, but seeing so many people at this ancient city contribute a feel of what it must have been like on an important market or religious holiday centuries ago. The crowds are big, so police are on hand to keep people at a distance so everyone can enjoy the view. Unfortunately, the masses that come to celebrate the equinox have caused the pyramid steps to be closed off so that it can no longer be climbed.

Coco´s Cat Rescue

Coco's Cat Rescue is a Playa del Carmen rescue charity focusing on the spay and neuter of feral cats and the care and re-homing of kittens in need of rescue. We provide free or low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to local residents, as well as vaccinations and basic animal care. So far we have rescued 167 kittens 155 of which have been successfully spayed/neutered and re-homed. 12 kittens are still up for adoption, (please contact us if you have an interest in providing a loving home for them.) In striving to reduce the local cat population Coco's Cat Rescue runs a TNR( trap spay/neuter return) program and so far have trapped, spayed/neutered over 210 feral cats.
Also 130 cat owners who could not afford the operation on their pets themselves have used our facility (for free or on an open donation basis.) We are now working with 5 local vets here in Playa del Carmen who offer services free of charge. It is because of these wonderful vets that we only have to pay for medicines and equipment. However this is still a considerable cost!

Coco's Cat Rescue is excited about being able to continue to provide the care and services for the cats of Riviera Maya and is looking forward to expanding and improving our outreach aid programs. Cash donations are needed to fund our spay neuter program as well as the adoption program so If you would like to make donations visit Coco´s Cat website.

Mexico Real Estate | Home, Property and Real Estate Investment in Playa del Carmen

When you prepare to purchase into Mexico Real Estate, and particularly, Playa del Carmen real estate, or any second homes market investment, a comparison of the local market conditions is recommended in order to ensure that your monies will generate solid healthy returns.

Two of the most important key factors to review in a lucrative vacation market are the tourism developments and projected population growth. Identifying these historical figures and future trends, will help you estimate future sub-factors which are favorable to your investments, such as Playa del Carmen Mexico vacation occupancy rates, Playa del Carmen Mexico demand on long term occupancy rates, Playa del Carmen environmental and quality of life, which all influence the rate of your real estate appreciation. Mexico has become a major international player in the tourism industry. Its proximity to USA and Canada are key factors to this achievement but its natural beauty is also attracting an ever increasing quantity of Europeans crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Mexico’s top 3 foreign exchange earnings sources are Oil, Remittances, and then Tourism. Tourism is projected to become the second highest generator by the year 2010. 2005 and 2006 were record breaking years.
International tourism in Mexico has been growing over the past decade and is projected to continue its aggressive rate for the next 10 years and plus. Cancun and the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen is in the heart of the Riviera Maya) are Mexico’s number one tourist destination of all its Mexican port cities. Tourism has become a new state priority with the new recently elected Federal Presidential team. The government is quite aware of its competitive advantage in the global vacation and second homes market and wishes to strengthen its overall economy with increased infrastructure development and investments.
