La Quinta or 5th avenue | The heart of Playa del Carmen

In vacation rentals and real estate description about Playa del Carmen you can often read: only one block from la Quinta or between la Quinta and the beach but do you know what La Quinta or 5th avenue is?
For first time visitors La Quinta or 5th avenue (is the same) is the heart of Playa del Carmen. Located just one block from the ocean, it holds an appeal for visitors, inviting them to walk up and down its whole length to absorb the real life of Playa (short for Playa del Carmen). Partly closed to cars to form a pedestrian thoroughfare, it concentrates most of Playa del Carmen's commercial activity. Those streets, which are parallel to the beach, are called avenidas or avenues and are numbered in steps of five starting from the beach 5th avenue, 10th avenue, 15th...... and so on. 10th Avenue would be one block back and parallel to the ocean and 15th avenue would be 3 blocks from the beach. For the ones that have been many years ago 5th split into two parts, the old 5th which is the naturally growing part and the new part, which is called Small Italy, where the restaurants, shops and hotels in that area are owned by European foreigners, mostly from Italy. There you will find Starbuck's, Ah Cacao, Coffee Café, Babe´s, El Diez, Häagen-Dazs.
More than 90 % off all the business from tourism in Playa del Carmen happens on the 5th, la quinta or Fifth Avenue which is most active during the night, when the sun has set. There are dozens of restaurants to pick from, bars to refresh yourself with a Margarita or cold beer, and stores where you can look for the right souvenir, shop for clothes, or simply look around and get a feel for the place.
